Self-help program

1. Managing daily life better

Getting daily life back on track is essential in overcoming depression.

You can regain activity in your daily life by changing behavior. This is possible even though it might feel like your thoughts, feelings and physical condition are fighting against you. It's important to ensure that progress happens gradually and in small increments.

A balance between rest and enough activity is important. However, don’t give in to the urge to rest all the time.

Five factors that strengthen mental well-being

In the video (1:31), Chief Physician Suoma Saarni presents five parts of daily life that have a significant impact on mental well-being and energy and ability to cope:

  1. Sleep
  2. Eating
  3. Physical activity
  4. Relationships
  5. Meaningful activities

These areas can be represented by the five fingers of a hand. The Mental Health Hand is a model developed by MIELI Mental Health Finland that describes the building blocks of everyday well-being.
