Self-help program

What should I do if I have suicidal thoughts?

If your depression worsens further or you have suicidal or self-harming thoughts, seek help immediately.

Suicidal thoughts are common among people with depression. Self-harm, for example cutting, is also quite common among those suffering from depression and anxiety.

Don’t deal with suicidal thoughts alone. There is no need to feel ashamed of them. In the video (1:48), Chief Physician Suoma Saarni encourages people to openly tell someone about their thoughts, or about self-harm that has already occurred, with someone close to them.

You can ask someone to help you seek care.

If you already have a named healthcare professional, tell them how you’re feeling.

If you don’t have a named healthcare professional, you should contact primary healthcare. Primary healthcare includes, for example, health centers, occupational health services, student health services, and private medical clinics.
