8. Make it easy to get started

Starting can be difficult for many reasons. The task may be too vague, difficult, or boring. You mightn’t feel up to the task. Many people end up caught in a cycle of postponing and procrastination.

It’s a good idea to first stop and think about what the problem is. When you realize that it’s difficult to start a particular task, pause. Consider the following points. Write down tips that suit the situation on a note or in your phone’s notes app.

What to do when

Use external incentives

Something enjoyable for you may make it easier to start a task. This could be, for example, music or a cup of coffee.

In the following video (1:42), experts explain what kinds of incentives can make it easier to get started and help you find motivation when you need to begin a task that feels boring.

Think about breaking the task into smaller parts

You can increase your own motivation in many different ways. In the following video (2:00), experts explain why a goal that is too large or too small can reduce motivation to start a task.

You will get tips on how to maintain motivation by setting realistic goals and breaking tasks into smaller parts.

Recognize possible performance pressures

Fear of failure and setting overly high demands for yourself can also lead to avoiding starting a task.

In the following video (1:35), experts discuss why it’s useful to learn to recognize thoughts related to your own performance. It may also be helpful to lower the bar when necessary.

Remember

When you realize that starting is difficult, think about what is actually wrong.
