Adding enjoyment to your day
People have significant differences in their ability to withstand stress, and it's good to learn to recognize your own limits. If you realize that you spend an excessive amount of time on things that drain your energy, you should take a look at your daily life and how you balance using your time.
Not enough time in your life for unwinding and relaxation may lead to issues such as
- low mood, irritability and tiredness
- issues with memory and loss of concentration
- excessive worry and anxiety
- lack of initiative
- lack of interest in things you previously found pleasant
What brings joy to you personally?
Different people enjoy different things. That is why it’s important that you know what brings joy to you personally. These sources of joy can include
- reading good books
- watching movies
- being active with associations, clubs and organizations
- meeting friends
Consider also if the things you choose will increase your wellbeing in the long run. When you’re exhausted, you may be prone to resorting to harmful quick fixes. For example, comfort foods, drinking, gambling or surfing the web can make you feel better for a while, but can be harmful in the long run.
Finding pleasant things is often easier in a happy state of mind.
Exercise: Pleasant Activities – what do you enjoy?
Why?
Enjoyment helps you cope with life’s responsibilities.
In this exercise, you learn to identify things that increase enjoyment in your daily life.
How?
Make a list of things you find pleasant. Place the list somewhere visible, such as on the refrigerator door.
As you create the list, recall all the things that have brought you satisfaction in the past. Don’t expect that they must bring you pleasure right now. Try to think of as many small things as you can and include as many items on your list as you can.
Remember
You can improve your well-being through simple everyday actions. It’s important to include things in your daily life that bring you pleasure. They help you cope with life’s responsibilities.
